This moon was named the harvest moon because during the night it lit up the sky so that farmers could harvest their crops with only the moon's luminous light to see. 19. The Harvest Moon takes place when the moon is Full during the time the farmers harvest their crops, near the Autumn Equinox. (September 22nd)
The Harvest Moon is special because is rises about 50 minutes faster than a usual moon rises. Some old myths or legends say that the moon rises while the sun is up so the farmers can get more done before it gets totally dark during the harvest season. Some people mistake the Harvest moon for the Hunter's moon, but it occurs in later October and is supposed to help hunter's see later at night.
There was a Super Harvest Moon on September 23rd, 2010 because the Full moon happened when the sun was right on the equator and it made the moon really bright. It was the first Super Harvest Moon since 1991.
I found my sources at many different sites.

  55. It comes but once every 20 years, a spectacular coincidence of summer verging into fall, as a rising harvest moon lights the evening sky just as the last sunset of summer glimmers out.

Called a "super harvest moon" for its spectacular apparent size and shimmering light, the moonrise at 6:28 p.m. Wednesday rings in fall as the season turns.

Wednesday marks the autumnal equinox, when night and day lengths are equal. It's the beginning of fall, to many our most poignant season, as the Northern Hemisphere begins its turn away from the sun, taking us into ever longer nights until Dec. 21, the winter solstice, when we swing back toward the light once more.
