Sunday is Halloween!! We have many traditions in this country to celebrate this holiday. Name one and tell me where that tradition came from. How about other countries? Is there a Halloween celebration in any other country? Where and when did this fun holiday originate? Name a book about Halloween, have you read it?
Make sure you attach the website where you found your information.

ReplyDeleteThe origin of Halloween came from the Celtic People. They started the celebration around 800 B.C. The Celtic people lie in Turkey and what is present day U.K. A tradition that we celebrate in the United States is Jack-o'-lanterns. They are hallowed out pumpkins with a design(s)that represent your personality. The Jack-o'-lantern tradition came from Ireland. The Europeans celebrate All Soul's Day and that holiday is very similar to our Halloween. A book about Halloween is Clifford's Halloween; yes I have read it. http://www.religioustolerance.org/hallo_cu.htm
ReplyDeleteOne tradition is that we carve pumpkins, this tradition came from an Irish folk tale in the 1800s. One other country that celebrates Halloween is Mexico. It originated in 800 BCE. ReplyDeleteThe word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.
ReplyDeleteOne story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living.
Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily parade around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess. In America we dress up in costumes and go around to random strangers houses and say trick or treat; sometimes people let you pick what you want or they just give you some random thing and half of the time you probably don't like it.

One of our many traditions is to dress up and go around trick-or-treating. This tradition originated around 700 b.c. Other countries celebrate Halloween such as, Britain and France. In these countries the druids would disguise themselves in costumes so the spirits would think that the druids belonged to their own company. This is where the custom of wearing costumes on Halloween, as well as trick-or-treating originated. Room on a Broom is a book about Halloween.

One tradition we have in the United States is that we dress up in costumes and go around town to go trick-or-treating. This tradition started in Ireland a long time ago. In Austria, some people will leave bread, water and a lighted lamp on the table before retiring on Halloween night. It was once believed that these would welcome the dead souls back to earth on a night that Austrians considered to be magical. A book about Halloween is The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and yes, I have read.

Trick-or-treating resembles the late medieval practice of souling, when poor folk would go door to door on Halloween receiving food in return for prayers for the dead on All Souls Day. ReplyDeletePeople in China observe the occasion of Halloween by placing food and water in front of the pictures of their diseased relatives. The Irish celebrate the festival by observing the same ancient rituals as was done during the time of the Celts, like lighting bonfires. In Japan, the festival is known as the Oban festival, which they celebrate by preparing delicacies and decorating with beautiful red lanterns that they light and then set afloat in the rivers. Halloween originated in 700 b.c wich was a very long time ago! There is a book out now about Halloween it is called Fly Ghost Fly by Betty Ann Schwartz.

ReplyDeleteOne Halloween tradition we do in the United States is... we carve jack-o-lanterns!!!
ReplyDeleteHere is the story how Jack-o-Lanterns came to be....(copy/paste from real site)
The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks. Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form. Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul. The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.
Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern."
In Japan they celebrate an O-bon Festival, which is a celebration of the memories of dead relatives.
The best book to read at halloween would probably be "Thirteen Nights of Halloween" by Rebecca Dickinson.

On Halloween, many families carve pumpkins. It was originated from an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which was celebrated from sunset on October 31st to sunset on November 1st, to honor the deceased relatives and friends. It was believed that the veil between this world and the other world was at its thinnest on this night and so it was considered the most magical night of the year (http://festivals.iloveindia.com/halloween/jack-o-lanterns/pumpkin-carving-history.html)!
