This week is National Handwashing Awareness Week.  Tell me why you think that we need such an awareness this time of year.  Then let me know the important proceedures for washing your hands and ways you can keep your hands germ free.  Don't forget to write complete sentences and link a URL for an interesting informational website that refers to the theme this week.

Let's try compound sentences again :)

December 4th is National Cookie Day.  Write 2 compound sentences about your favorite cookie.  Tell me why it is your favorite cookie and what makes it better than any other cookie.  Post a link to a website that gives me the recipe to your favorite cookie.

Write 3 compound sentences to describe your coming Thanksgiving celebration.  Include in each sentence at least one adjective to make the sentences more interesting.  Then find and write the date that Thanksgiving first became a national holiday and include the source of your information.

We will be taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills next week.  What is your honest opinion of the test?  Please be specific with your comments - things that show it is bad, things that show it is good.  Why do we need to take the test?  What are some ways to prepare for the test?  How can you help yourself improve on this year's test?

November 2^nd is Election Day.  Find out why the Democratic Party is represented by a donkey and the Republican Party is represented by an elephant.  Please write about the origins of these two symbols.  There are a couple words that I want you to define too.  The words are conservative and liberal.  What do they mean and which party is labeled with which word.  Please give me the source of your information .

Sunday is Halloween!!  We have many traditions in this country to celebrate this holiday.  Name one and tell me where that tradition came from.  How about other countries?  Is there a Halloween celebration in any other country?   Where and when did this fun holiday originate?  Name a book about Halloween, have you read it?

Answer the questions with a brief paragraph, then write your own poem about Fall.

Why do leaves change colors and fall off in the Autumn?  Find a poem about the leaves changing in the Fall and cite the url where you found the poem.  Then write your own poem.  Have fun with the poem.  Here's mine:

The old man woke up and said to his wife,

"We don't want to live a cold, dark life.

Just look at the leaves - they're fall down'

Let's get ourselves out of this northern town!"
